What to Look for in Performance Sunglasses

Although not part of the Matrix sunglasses collection, there is an absolutely huge market for so-called performance sunglasses.  These are simply sunglasses that are designed to be used in high impact activities, like mountain climbing, cross-country biking, snowboarding, skiing, skateboarding, etc.  There are a few common characteristics of these shades that are definitely must-haves.

First and perhaps most obvious is that they must be more durable than everyday sunglasses.  They should have thicker frames, as well as polycarbonate lenses which are lightweight yet ultra impact resistant.  Plastic lenses are good too, as they are not as prone to shattering as glass lenses.

Performance shades also must offer a higher level of visual clarity, much of which can be achieved via the lens color. Specific lens tints are needed for specific types of activities.  For example, yellow sunglasses are used by hunters because this color helps maintain consistent visual acuity even though the environment consists of the woods which have areas of sunlight and shade intermixed.  On the other hand, amber lenses are better for ski pros because they promote an increased level of contrast on the mostly-white ski slopes.

Performance sunglasses should also offer maximum protection from the harmful UV rays of the sun.  Specifically, they should provide UV400 protection, which is the best level of protection available.  Similarly, performance sunglasses should also have polarized lenses, which help filter reflective light that bounces off of horizontal surfaces.  Thus, fishermen, race care drivers, and even golfers can benefit from wearing shades with polarized lenses.

Finally, you’ll want to make sure the sunglasses fit properly, especially since you’ll be wearing them during strenuous activities.  Wrap around styles are often the best choice for their snug fit and extra UV protection.  You can also get shades with no-slip nose pads.  You’ll also want to ensure that the shades are lightweight and comfortable.

The bottom line is that strenuous outdoor activities require the use of performance sunglasses that are durable, impact resistant, vision-enhancing, UV protective, and well-fitting.  Also, manufacturers now make different sunglasses specifically for certain activities, so make sure you get a style that is appropriate for your needs.  Good luck and have fun!
