One of my friends is evaluating the feasibility of starting a wholesale sunglass distribution company. As such, he asked me if I ever did any overall industry market research, or if I have seen any recent market share data. Of course, my answer was ‘no’ on both counts, mainly because the niche of Matrix sunglasses is so small and unique that extensive research was simply never necessary. But the question did inspire the topic for today’s post.
I did some research online and came up with a list of what seem like the 5 most popular brands of sunglasses in the world today. Although I did not pay for a market research report to come up with this list, I think it is a fairly good representation of what style moguls would consider as today’s hottest brands.
Of course the top brand is probably Oakley. Known for high quality and durability, Oakley’s have been a staple in both summer and winter sports for decades. The company offers top notch lens technology, dozens of different styles, and of course a powerful brand name. Prices generally range from $80-$160.
Ray Ban is another brand that has withstood the test of time. This is a company that has made a name for itself by focusing on quality and style. Its Wayfarer style may be one of the most popular styles of all time. Prices generally range from $80-$170.
Prada is another well-respected brand that comes to mind. These are designer shades so you’ll pay a premium, but they are considered very stylish. These will cost you anywhere from $90 to several hundred dollars.
Fossil is a solid brand with prices more affordable than the others on this list. In fact, you can get an awesome Fossil watch for less than $50. The quality may not be quite as high as the others, but if style is the main goal then these are worth considering.
Finally, Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses are very fashionable. The entry price for any of these styles is the highest out of all the brands on this list (starts at $120), but the D&G brand is considered to be a status symbol so that alone may be worth the price for some people.
